You can take the girl out of Louisiana but you can't take Louisiana out of the girl. Deeply connected to her Southern roots, when arriving in New York in her late teens to pursue the long since dead Bohemian lifestyle, unlike half of the city, Gracie didn't drop her accent. She also feels as if her past is secondary to her life now and whoever she was when she lived with her fairly affluent parents doesn't matter at all.

Born in the fall of 1980, little Grace was exactly what the doctor ordered. White blonde hair pleased both of her parents, as did her gender, and the following 10 years were spent bending and shaping her into being the kind of Southern debutant that no longer existed. Gracie, able to balance books on her head with her posture, had other ideas. From an early age she knew she wanted to go to New York City, so at the first available opportunity, turning down most of the scholarships that were offered to her, she begged her father to fund her trip out there.

For a while, she was happy to be scraping for food to eat if she got to paint, and adopted a less pulled together look for rags that only riches could buy. In her first few years of living there through a lot of experimentation with both sexes, she discovered her sexuality. Being an artist, it was a blessing to be free in the way she mistakenly thought she was, but whenever anybody would confront her about it, a deeply set shame of being more female-inclined started to take over her life. The older she got, the more embarrassed she became over who she was attracted to, and by 25, she'd taken to dating men to see if she could control it in any way. She couldn't.

Being a painter with a drying trust fund, she had to find herself a job that paid, she decided to leave the grey streets in pursuit of a warmer, less changeable climate. California was calling. She found it hard to manage to get a job in a gallery due to her severe lack of qualifications. Even volunteer positions were difficult to obtain. Eventually, after a phone call in which an old friend called her the most selfish person in the world, she decided to enroll in nursing school to proove them wrong. Ultimately, she wound up in dermatology, sort of doing the opposite.
